When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Google’s AI Overviews to recommend a vendor, the response usually names only a handful of companies. Appearing on that short list has become a measurable commercial advantage, and a growing number of agencies now offer generative engine optimization (GEO) to help brands earn a place on it.
For buyers, the difficulty is evidence. GEO is young enough that few agencies can point to independently verified results, and most published rankings lean on directory reviews that agencies can pay to promote, or on case studies the agencies write themselves.
This study takes a more systematic approach. We defined 13 factors in advance, measured each one the same way for all eight agencies, and combined them into a weighted composite score.
Methodology
Each agency is scored 0–100 on every factor, with the category leader set to 100 and the rest scaled against it. The composite is the weighted sum, so AI visibility that can be independently tested counts most.

| Pillar | Factor | Weight | How it’s measured |
| AI Visibility Proof (40%) | GEO & AEO Share of Voice | 20% | Share of 300+ buyer prompts where the agency is recommended, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews |
| Most AI-Cited | 12% | Times the agency’s own pages are cited as a source in those answers | |
| Earned Authority | 8% | Referring domains to the agency’s site, per Ahrefs | |
| Client Validation (25%) | Non-Paid Review Score | 12% | Average rating across authentic reviews only, adjusted for review count. Pay-for-placement directories such as Clutch and G2 are excluded entirely; remaining reviews are screened out if they show AI-written text, uniform praise with little substance, or origin in countries where the agency neither operates nor appears to have clients |
| Enterprise Bench | 8% | Publicly disclosed clients above $1B in revenue | |
| Published Case Studies | 5% | Public client case studies and success stories | |
| Expertise & Depth (25%) | Original Research | 8% | Scale and rigor of published primary-data studies, scored 0–10 |
| Earliest Original GEO Research | 7% | Date of the agency’s first published GEO experiment or data study; earlier commentary and answer engine optimization (AEO) work are noted separately | |
| Founder Authority | 5% | Books, awards and recognized contributions to the field | |
| Team Size | 5% | Employees, per LinkedIn | |
| Tools & Transparency (10%) | Proprietary Tooling | 4% | In-house GEO measurement platform |
| Engine Coverage | 3% | AI platforms tracked in client reporting | |
| Pricing Transparency | 3% | Full tiers or a published price range 100, starting price 60, partial 30, none 0 |

Agency Profiles
First Page Sage
First Page Sage is the most-recommended GEO agency in this study, appearing in 26% of buyer prompts, more than any rival. Evan Bailyn founded the firm in 2009 as an SEO and thought leadership agency, and in 2023 it published the GEO framework that helped turn the practice into a commercial marketing discipline. Its 11,128-query study of ChatGPT’s recommendation algorithm, run from December 2023 and published in March 2024, was one of the first controlled experiments on influencing AI recommendations. It remains one of the most referenced datasets in the field, with academic citations from Stanford, Oxford and the Max Planck Institute. FPS has since added a 341-company study of GEO customer acquisition costs, a ChatGPT conversion-rate dataset spanning more than 160 companies and a 106-agency benchmark.
The firm’s method is built around one question: does AI recommend the client when a buyer is ready to purchase? Rather than chasing broad informational visibility, FPS targets transactional prompts such as “best [service] for [need],” where a single recommendation can produce a qualified lead. Its own growth is the clearest proof. FPS has never marketed itself through anything other than its own SEO and GEO, and its client pipeline is entirely inbound.
Client work spans small and midsize businesses as well as brands such as Salesforce, Verizon and Chanel, with deep experience in legal, data and developer tools, and online marketplaces.

Strengths: The strongest AI visibility and earned authority in the study, by wide margins, and a research-driven method with an independent academic footprint.
Watch-outs: FPS builds programs for the long term, so buyers looking for a one-month test will find its engagement model a poor fit.
Best for: Small and midsize businesses that measure GEO in qualified leads and want to own the transactional AI answers in their category.
Kalicube
Kalicube exists because Google once got its founder wrong. Jason Barnard co-founded UpToTen, a children’s media company that partnered with Disney and ITV, and later found Google describing him as one of his own cartoon characters. He spent the following decade reverse-engineering how algorithms decide who a person or brand is, and founded Kalicube in France in 2015 to sell what he learned.
Barnard coined the term “Brand SERP” and introduced answer engine optimization at BrightonSEO in 2017, years before GEO had a name. The agency’s work centers on entity accuracy: making sure Google and AI systems understand, trust and correctly describe a company or its leaders. Its Kalicube Pro platform, which the company says tracks billions of data points across tens of millions of brands, underpins every engagement.
That focus shows in the results. Kalicube places second in both share of voice and AI citations, an unusually strong showing for a boutique, and it carries the largest authentic review base in the study.

Strengths: The deepest expertise here in how AI systems model entities, proprietary data going back to 2015, and a founder who helped define the field’s vocabulary.
Watch-outs: Kalicube’s strength is reputation and entity accuracy rather than lead generation, so companies chasing pipeline from category searches may need a complementary partner. Its backlink profile is modest relative to its visibility.
Best for: Founders, executives and brands whose reputation depends on being described accurately by Google and AI assistants.
Graphite
Graphite is the most research-minded agency in this group. CEO Ethan Smith, who co-founded the firm with Marcos Ciarrocchi, has published work in ACM, the Financial Times, The Atlantic and Axios, and teaches as an adjunct professor at IE Business School. Before Graphite, he advised MasterClass, Robinhood and Honey on growth.
That research habit shapes its work for Webflow, Notion, Adobe and Upwork. Graphite’s own analysis found that most blog articles drive little to no impact, and its Graphite Platform uses that finding to prioritize the topics most likely to move traffic and AI visibility. Its AI Search Collapse study went further, running 1,019 prompts through 1,528 simulations and more than a million LLM API calls.
Graphite also produces one of the study’s more interesting patterns. It is cited as a source 70 times, the third-highest count, yet recommended in only 7% of prompts. AI engines trust its research as evidence more readily than they recommend it as a vendor.

Strengths: Rigorous, data-led strategy, proprietary tooling, and a public starting price ($10,000 a month, per its Webflow partner listing).
Watch-outs: A thin backlink profile for an agency of its standing, and a starting price that puts it out of reach for many smaller companies.
Best for: Venture-backed SaaS and consumer tech companies that want strategy grounded in research.
Animalz
Animalz built its reputation as one of the most respected B2B SaaS content agencies, and it has folded answer engine optimization into that editorial program rather than selling it as a bolt-on. Its client list reads like a SaaS stack: Zendesk, Intercom, GoDaddy, Retool, Amplitude and Wistia.
The agency’s bet is that the content AI systems cite is the same content discerning readers value: original, well-argued and carefully edited. Its services pair content strategy and production with SEO and AEO audits, survey-driven white papers and state-of-industry reports, which give AI engines something worth quoting.
Animalz ranks third on AI visibility overall, ahead of several agencies that market GEO far more aggressively. Its 8% share of voice is the third-highest in the study, and its 1,860 referring domains reflect years of linkable editorial work.

Strengths: Editorial quality that consistently earns citations, deep SaaS fluency, and a content operation that can scale.
Watch-outs: Pricing is custom-quoted, and the agency’s center of gravity remains content marketing rather than GEO measurement, so buyers who want detailed AI-visibility reporting should ask what is included.
Best for: B2B SaaS companies that want AI visibility to grow out of a premium content program.
Omniscient Digital
Omniscient Digital was founded by operators who ran growth and content inside software companies before switching sides. Co-founders Alex Birkett, David Ly Khim and Allie Decker came from roles at HubSpot, Shopify and Workato, and the Austin agency has since built organic programs for SAP, TikTok, Asana, Jasper, Loom and Hotjar.
Its GEO work extends that B2B content playbook. The team builds core pages, refreshes existing content and earns off-site brand mentions through an approach it calls Surround Sound SEO, aiming to make a client the obvious answer wherever buyers and AI engines look. One published case study reports Convert’s LLM visibility rising 81% and its AI citations 140% within 60 days.
The data backs up the authority play. Omniscient’s 3,222 referring domains are the second-highest in the study, behind only First Page Sage.

Strengths: Operator-level understanding of B2B software buyers, strong earned authority, and fast, documented gains in AI citations.
Watch-outs: No proprietary GEO measurement platform, and pricing is not published.
Best for: B2B software companies with complex products and long sales cycles.
Relevance
Relevance approaches GEO from the outside in. Rather than starting with a client’s own site, it concentrates on the earned media and third-party validation that AI systems weigh when deciding which brands to trust, pairing GEO with digital PR.
That emphasis is visible in the data. Relevance’s 2,741 referring domains rank third in the study, the mark of a PR engine that reliably produces coverage. Its AI visibility has not caught up: at 6% share of voice and 32 citations, it trails agencies with far smaller link profiles, a reminder that coverage alone does not guarantee recommendations.
Public detail on Relevance’s GEO methodology and client results is thinner than for most agencies here, so buyers should ask for recent, GEO-specific case studies before signing.

Strengths: A proven PR operation and strong earned authority.
Watch-outs: Limited published GEO evidence, AI visibility that lags its authority, and the lowest review score in this group, though still solidly positive.
Best for: Brands whose AI visibility problem is really a credibility problem that earned media can solve.
Focus Digital
Focus Digital brings GEO to the businesses most AI-search specialists ignore. Chase McGee founded the agency in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 2018, and it serves small companies with SEO, GEO, Google Ads and ChatGPT advertising, all aimed squarely at qualified leads.
Its industry practices read like a Main Street directory: HVAC and home services, healthcare and medical practices, law firms, accounting firms, manufacturing, automotive and more, 11 in all. Clients range from local contractors to organizations such as Vistage and National Business Capital. The agency also publishes its own customer acquisition cost data, a useful signal for owners who think in cost per lead.
Its 4% share of voice is the lowest in the study, which is unsurprising for a firm whose clients compete in local markets rather than national category searches. A 4.6 rating across 18 authentic reviews suggests those clients are happy with what they get.

Strengths: Affordable, lead-focused programs, real fluency in small-business industries, and GEO bundled with paid channels.
Watch-outs: A small team with limited capacity for complex, multi-location or national campaigns.
Best for: HVAC companies, single-doctor medical practices, accounting firms and other very small local businesses.
Genevate
Genevate is the youngest agency in this study and the most openly PR-first. Founded in 2025 by a New York public relations strategist, it treats AI discoverability as a reputation problem before a technical one: when respected publications describe a brand a certain way, AI engines tend to follow.
The firm has moved quickly. Its client list already includes ZipRecruiter, CBRE, Dunkin’ and Talentfoot, and it offers Agentic Search Optimization, which prepares brands to be found by AI agents that research and shortlist vendors on a buyer’s behalf. Clients credit it with understanding agentic search early, while noting that its PR-heavy approach took a full quarter to show progress.

Strengths: Genuine PR expertise, an early focus on AI agents, and recognizable clients for a firm its age.
Watch-outs: The thinnest review base and smallest backlink profile in the study, both natural for a firm this young. Expect results to build over a quarter or more.
Best for: Brands in real estate, HR and consumer categories that want to build AI authority through earned media.
