Chart (1)

Last updated: August 11, 2026

Our research team conducted a comparative study on the U.S. and global market penetration of the two dominant online search platforms, Google and ChatGPT. Using a blend of client analytics, third-party usage datasets, and anonymized user behavior logs, we developed a model to estimate monthly active users (MAUs), engagement time, and share of total digital query volume.

While Google remains the longstanding leader in information retrieval, ChatGPT has rapidly expanded how people use AI for search, particularly for conversational queries and creative tasks. ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026, becoming the fastest app in history to reach that milestone. However, Google Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and other AI chatbots are growing quickly, creating an increasingly competitive landscape.

This report provides a side-by-side Google vs ChatGPT market share analysis, beginning with a high-level comparison. In the sections below, we further segment usage by device type, demographic groups, and user intent, and close with an analysis of the broader AI chatbot competitive landscape.

Google vs ChatGPT Market Share: Q2 2026

PlatformMonthly Active Users (Global)Share of Total Digital QueriesAvg. Session Duration
Google Search5.3 billion57.0%6m 12s
ChatGPT1 billion17.9%13m 09s
Other (e.g., Bing, Google Gemini)1.4 billion25.1%4m 33s

Key Insights:

  • Google still dominates search, with approximately 57% of global digital queries.
  • ChatGPT now commands approximately 17.9% of total digital queries, representing the most significant challenge to Google’s share of digital queries in recent years.
  • Despite having fewer total users than Google, ChatGPT has a substantially longer session duration, indicating deep user engagement.

Google vs ChatGPT Market Share Over Time

In the following graph, you can see trendlines for Google and ChatGPT’s market share.

However, when you break out the data by transactional queries only, which are by far the most valuable to businesses, Google is less vulnerable to ChatGPT.

Google vs ChatGPT Market Share, Transactional Queries Only
Q1 2023 — Q2 2026

Chart

This may be because users still rely on Google when they have a clear intent to buy, compare products or services, or visit a specific website. Google’s mature search ecosystem, shopping features, local business listings, ads, and direct links make it more equipped for transactional tasks. Although AI chatbots are becoming more commonly used for transactional queries, most ChatGPT users are researching, brainstorming, and answering complex questions.

Market Share by Device Type

In the table below, we compare usage of Google and ChatGPT across mobile and desktop platforms, revealing device-based user behavior trends.

Google vs ChatGPT Market Share by Device Type — 2026

PlatformDesktop Usage ShareMobile Usage Share
Google Search37%63%
ChatGPT62%38%

Research Notes:

  • ChatGPT sees stronger engagement on desktops, suggesting preference among professionals and researchers, consistent with its strength in informational and generative queries rather than the transactional queries where Google dominates.
  • Google’s mobile-first design solidifies its dominance among casual and on-the-go users.

Market Share by Age Group

In the table below, we detail market share trends segmented by user age group.

Google vs ChatGPT Market Share by Age Group — 2026

Age GroupGoogle ShareChatGPT Share
13–2474%17%
25–4480%13%
45–6486%8%
65+89%5%

Key Insights:

  • Generational habits are shifting: Younger users appear more willing to replace or supplement traditional search engines with conversational AI, suggesting search behavior may continue to evolve as these users age.
  • Google’s position remains highly resilient: Despite rapid AI adoption, Google continues to dominate search across every demographic, indicating that conversational AI is complementing, not replacing, traditional search for most users.
  • AI adoption will likely broaden over time: As AI tools become more integrated into browsers, operating systems, and workplace software, older age groups may gradually increase their use, narrowing today’s generational gap.

Market Share by User Intent

In the table below, we classify digital queries into primary intent categories, showing how Google and ChatGPT are used differently.

Google vs ChatGPT Market Share by User Intent — 2026

Intent CategoryGoogle ShareChatGPT Share
Navigational93%3%
Informational71%23%
Transactional90%5%
Generative/Creative29%64%

Key Insights:

  • Google leads in transactional intents due to (a) rich ecommerce and map results on the B2C side; and (b) greater trust for the format of browsing multiple viewpoints/websites vs the “single source of truth” ChatGPT format in higher-stakes purchasing scenarios.
  • ChatGPT dominates in generative/creative queries such as ideation, storytelling, and academic drafting.

AI Chatbot Competitive Landscape

While Google Search and ChatGPT occupy different market categories, significant competitive shifts are occurring within the AI chatbot market that have direct implications for ChatGPT’s long-term trajectory. The data below is scoped specifically to AI chatbot web traffic share, a different metric from the total digital query share in the tables above.

AI Chatbot Web Traffic Market Share — Q2 2025 vs. Q2 2026

PlatformQ2 2025Q2 2026YoY Change
ChatGPT~86.7%~51.3%▼ 35.4 pts
Google Gemini~5.7%~27.7%▲ 22.0 pts

Key Insights:

  • ChatGPT leads but is losing ground fast. ChatGPT’s 35.4 percentage point year-over-year decline is a significant loss for any platform at its scale.
  • Gemini is the biggest winner in YoY growth of chatbot web traffic, having grown its share from 5.7% to 27.7%. By the end of Q2 2026, Gemini had reached 900 million monthly active users, making the gap between the two platforms narrower than web traffic share alone suggests.
  • The gap between available options has narrowed significantly, from approximately 81 percentage points in Q2 2025 to 23.6 points in Q2 2026. If current trajectories hold, Gemini could challenge ChatGPT’s dominance within the next 12 to 24 months.
  • Beyond Gemini, Claude (Anthropic) and Meta AI are the fastest-growing AI platforms, posting year-over-year MAU growth of 640% and 973%, respectively. While both start from a smaller base than ChatGPT or Gemini, their growth rates signal a rapidly broadening competitive landscape.
