AI video generators can now turn a sentence or a single photo into a short clip with realistic motion, sound and dialogue. The field also changed a great deal this year: OpenAI closed its Sora app in April 2026 and shut down the Sora API in September, and Microsoft retired the Sora-based video tool in Copilot. To find out which AI is best for video generation now, our research team ran a head-to-head study from October 1 to October 16, 2026.
We gave the same 400 prompts to ten AI video platforms on their highest-quality settings, producing 4,000 clips. The prompts covered eight tasks, with 50 prompts each, from realistic scenes and animating a still photo to spoken dialogue and editing an existing clip. A panel of five professional video editors, cinematographers and animators scored every clip from 0 to 100 without knowing which platform made it. We also sorted every clip by how usable it was, timed every generation and recorded the cost of each second of video.
Summary of Findings
- Google Gemini is the best AI for video generation overall, scoring 89.4 out of 100 with Gemini Omni Flash 1.1, followed by Dreamina at 88.5 and Kling at 87.5.
- Gemini won three of the eight tasks: audio and lip sync (92.3), prompt adherence (91.4) and text in video (90.7). Kling won image-to-video and character consistency, Dreamina won realism, Hailuo AI won motion and physics and Runway won editing.
- Google Gemini produced the most usable clips: 71.4% were usable as generated, compared with 47.2% for Meta AI.
- Gemini Omni Flash 1.1 is also the best free option, since it is free to use in YouTube Shorts and YouTube Create. ChatGPT no longer makes video after OpenAI shut down Sora in 2026.
Best AI for Video Generation Overall
Each platform was tested on its highest-quality video model. A platform’s overall score is the average of its scores across the eight tasks in our study, with each task weighted equally. In the table below, we rank the ten platforms from highest to lowest. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and DeepSeek were not ranked because none of them offered video generation during the study.

Our researchers took three main points from this data:
- We found that Google Gemini led because of its audio and its accuracy. It scored highest on audio and lip sync, prompt adherence and text in video, and it finished in the top three in seven of the eight tasks.
- The top three platforms were separated by 1.9 points. Dreamina, the ByteDance app that runs Seedance 2.5, produced the most realistic footage in the study (90.8) and the longest single clips, up to 30 seconds.
- Midjourney ranked ninth overall but scored 86.9 on image-to-video, its strongest task. It does not generate sound, and its text in video score (70.2) was the lowest of any platform.
Best AI for Each Type of Video
The prompts in our study were split evenly across eight tasks, with 50 prompts per task. Midjourney does not generate sound, so it was not scored on audio and lip sync, and its overall score is the average of the other seven tasks. The first table below shows the winner and runner-up in each task. The second table and the heat map that follows show every platform’s score in every task, with the top score in each column in bold.

| Meta AI | 78.4 | 79.6 | 76.9 | 80.3 | 79.2 | 78.8 | 72.4 | 76.1 |

Here is what our team took from the task-level results:
- We found that five different platforms won at least one task. Google Gemini won three, Kling won two, and Dreamina, Hailuo AI and Runway won one each.
- Text in video produced the widest gap of any task, 20.5 points between Google Gemini (90.7) and Midjourney (70.2). Most platforms still struggled to spell words on signs, screens and labels.
- Runway won editing and extending clips (88.9), which reflects its editing tools for changing the lighting, camera angle or objects in footage that already exists. Hailuo AI won motion and physics (90.1), with the most believable falling, splashing and running.
Usable Clips and Common Flaws
A high score matters less if most clips need to be generated again. Our panel sorted every clip into one of three groups: usable as generated, usable with minor flaws such as a brief flicker, or unusable because of a major flaw such as a warped face or an object that changes shape. We also recorded the most common flaw for each platform. The table below is sorted by overall score.
Usable Clips and Most Common Flaw by AI Platform (October 2026)
| AI Platform | Usable as Generated | Minor Flaws | Major Flaws | Most Common Flaw |
| Google Gemini | 71.4% | 20.3% | 8.3% | Unnatural hand movement |
| Dreamina | 69.8% | 21.1% | 9.1% | Lip sync drifting out of time |
| Kling | 68.2% | 22.0% | 9.8% | Garbled on-screen text |
| Hailuo AI | 66.5% | 22.9% | 10.6% | Garbled on-screen text |
| Runway | 62.7% | 24.6% | 12.7% | Objects passing through each other |
| Grok | 58.9% | 26.3% | 14.8% | Faces changing between shots |
| Luma AI | 57.3% | 26.9% | 15.8% | Faces changing between shots |
| PixVerse | 55.1% | 27.6% | 17.3% | Warped hands |
| Midjourney | 51.6% | 28.7% | 19.7% | Garbled on-screen text |
| Meta AI | 47.2% | 30.1% | 22.7% | Warped hands |

Our researchers drew three conclusions from the usability data:
- We found that 71.4% of Google Gemini’s clips were usable as generated, the highest rate in the study. Only 8.3% had a major flaw.
- Garbled on-screen text was the most common flaw on three platforms: Kling, Hailuo AI and Midjourney. Warped hands were the most common flaw on PixVerse and Meta AI.
- Meta AI produced a major flaw in 22.7% of clips, so roughly one clip in five had to be made again.
Clip Length, Speed and Cost
Video tools differ widely in how long a clip they can make, how long it takes to render and how much each second of video costs. We recorded the longest clip each platform could make in a single generation, the average time it took to render one clip at its highest quality setting, and the cost of one second of video on its lowest-priced paid plan.
Clip Length, Speed and Cost by AI Platform (October 2026)
| AI Platform | Longest Single Clip (Seconds) | Avg. Seconds to Render One Clip | Cost per Second of Video |
| Google Gemini | 10 | 74 | $0.10 |
| Dreamina | 30 | 118 | $0.23 |
| Kling | 15 | 96 | $0.14 |
| Hailuo AI | 10 | 81 | $0.13 |
| Runway | 10 | 63 | $0.12 |
| Grok | 15 | 27 | $0.07 |
| Luma AI | 10 | 58 | $0.11 |
| PixVerse | 15 | 44 | $0.06 |
| Midjourney | 5 (21 with extensions) | 52 | $0.08 |
| Meta AI | 8 | 35 | Free |

Here is what our team took from the speed and cost data:
- We found that Grok was the fastest platform, rendering a clip in 27 seconds on average, while Dreamina was the slowest at 118 seconds but made clips up to 30 seconds long.
- Google Gemini, the highest-scoring platform, cost $0.10 per second, lower than the price of five of the other eight paid platforms. Dreamina cost the most at $0.23 per second.
- PixVerse was the cheapest paid option at $0.06 per second, and Meta AI’s Vibes app is free for everyone.
