AI tools can now write game code, build a playable prototype from a short description and generate the art to go with it. In the 2026 State of the Game Industry report from GDC, 36% of game industry professionals said they use generative AI tools in their work. To find out which AI is best for game development, our research team ran a head-to-head study from September 29 to October 16, 2026.
We gave the same 480 game development requests to ten AI platforms: seven general AI assistants, each with its coding agent where one exists, and three tools built for making games, Unity AI, Roblox Assistant and Rosebud AI. The requests covered eight tasks, with 60 requests each, across the Unity, Unreal, Godot and Roblox engines, producing 4,800 results. Unity AI and Roblox Assistant were tested inside their own engines, and Rosebud AI in its browser-based game builder. A panel of four professional game developers, two technical artists and a narrative designer scored every result from 0 to 100 without knowing which platform made it. We also played every prototype to see whether it ran, counted the bugs in each one and checked every script for outdated engine code.
Summary of Findings
- Claude is the best AI for game development overall, scoring 90.7 out of 100 with Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Code, followed by ChatGPT at 89.9 and Google Gemini at 88.8.
- Claude won three of the eight tasks: gameplay scripting (92.4), debugging game code (92.6) and performance optimization (90.3). ChatGPT led game design documents and NPC dialogue, and Gemini led level design and art assets.
- Rosebud AI built the most playable prototypes from a prompt: 53 of 60 ran and could be played start to finish, followed by Roblox Assistant with 52.
- Roblox Assistant made the fewest engine-specific errors, 0.4 per 1,000 lines of code, compared with 3.6 for Meta AI.
Best AI for Game Development Overall
Each platform was tested on its best available model or plan. A platform’s overall score is the average of its scores across the eight tasks in our study, with each task weighted equally. Claude and DeepSeek do not generate images, so they were not scored on art assets, and their overall scores are the average of the other seven tasks. In the table below, we rank the ten platforms from highest to lowest.
Game Development Scores by AI Platform (September to October 2026)

| Meta AI | 77.4 | 76.8 | 80.3 | 79.6 | 83.1 | 85.1 | 76.2 | 74.9 |

Here is what our team took from the task-level results:
- We found that four different platforms won at least one task. Claude won three, ChatGPT and Google Gemini won two each, and Rosebud AI won one.
- Debugging game code produced the widest gap of any task, 16.4 points between Claude (92.6) and Meta AI (76.2). The weaker platforms often fixed the error message but left the bug that caused it, such as a physics update running in the wrong loop.
- ChatGPT led game design documents (91.3) and NPC dialogue (91.6), where the narrative designer on our panel rewarded its characters’ distinct voices. Google Gemini led level design (89.3) and 2D and 3D art assets (90.4).
Accuracy: Playable Prototypes, Bugs and Outdated Engine Code
A game has to run before it can be judged. We played every one of the 60 prototypes each platform built and counted it as playable only if it loaded, responded to the controls and could be played from start to finish. Our developers logged every bug they found, and we checked all generated scripts for engine-specific errors, such as functions an engine has removed or renamed. We also counted the share of art assets that a technical artist could drop into a game without fixing them. The table below is sorted by the share of playable prototypes.
Prototypes, Bugs and Engine Errors by AI Platform (September to October 2026)
| AI Platform | Playable Prototypes | Bugs per Prototype | Engine Errors per 1,000 Lines of Code | Art Assets Usable Without Fixes |
| Rosebud AI | 53 of 60 (88.3%) | 1.2 | 0.6 | 70.9% |
| Roblox Assistant | 52 of 60 (86.7%) | 1.3 | 0.4 | 74.8% |
| Claude | 50 of 60 (83.3%) | 1.4 | 0.8 | N/A |
| ChatGPT | 49 of 60 (81.7%) | 1.7 | 1.2 | 76.4% |
| Unity AI | 48 of 60 (80.0%) | 1.6 | 0.5 | 72.6% |
| Google Gemini | 47 of 60 (78.3%) | 1.9 | 1.5 | 81.3% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 43 of 60 (71.7%) | 2.4 | 2.1 | 69.8% |
| Grok | 42 of 60 (70.0%) | 2.6 | 2.4 | 73.5% |
| DeepSeek | 41 of 60 (68.3%) | 2.8 | 3.1 | N/A |
| Meta AI | 37 of 60 (61.7%) | 3.4 | 3.6 | 66.2% |

Our researchers drew three conclusions from the accuracy data:
- We found that Rosebud AI (53 of 60) and Roblox Assistant (52 of 60) built the most playable prototypes, because both build and run the game in their own engine. Claude led the general assistants with 50 of 60.
- Roblox Assistant (0.4) and Unity AI (0.5) made the fewest engine errors per 1,000 lines, since each works only with its own engine. DeepSeek (3.1) and Meta AI (3.6) most often used functions that newer engine versions no longer support.
- Google Gemini made the most usable art assets (81.3% needed no fixes), followed by ChatGPT (76.4%). The most common problems on other platforms were textures that did not tile and 3D models with too many polygons for a game.
Best AI for Each Game Engine
Most developers work in one engine, so we also broke out the gameplay scripting results by engine. Unity AI was tested only in Unity and Roblox Assistant only in Roblox. The table below shows each platform’s scripting score for each engine, with the top score in each column in bold.
Gameplay Scripting Scores by Game Engine and AI Platform (September to October 2026)
| AI Platform | Unity (C#) | Unreal (Blueprints and C++) | Godot (GDScript) | Roblox (Luau) |
| Claude | 93.4 | 91.2 | 92.1 | 92.9 |
| ChatGPT | 91.8 | 90.2 | 89.4 | 91.0 |
| Google Gemini | 90.3 | 89.6 | 87.2 | 89.3 |
| DeepSeek | 87.4 | 86.3 | 83.6 | 87.1 |
| Microsoft Copilot | 86.9 | 85.1 | 82.7 | 86.1 |
| Grok | 85.8 | 84.2 | 82.9 | 85.5 |
| Meta AI | 78.6 | 76.1 | 74.8 | 80.1 |
| Unity AI | 88.7 | N/A | N/A | N/A |
| Roblox Assistant | N/A | N/A | N/A | 88.3 |

Here is what our team took from the engine results:
- We found that Claude scored highest in all four engines, from 91.2 in Unreal to 93.4 in Unity.
- Godot was the hardest engine for six of the seven general assistants. GDScript has less public example code than C# or Luau, and the weaker platforms often mixed in syntax from older versions of Godot.
- Unity AI scored 88.7 in Unity, 4.7 points below Claude, and Roblox Assistant scored 88.3 in Roblox, 4.6 points below Claude. Both built-in tools still made fewer engine errors, so many developers may want to use them alongside a general assistant.
