First Page Sage’s research team analyzed ChatGPT conversion rates across industries using anonymized data from more than 160 client companies, collected between May 2025 and July 2026. The study measured the percentage of each company’s ChatGPT referral traffic that resulted in a conversion action, as defined by that company. 

Most companies in the dataset invested in generative engine optimization (GEO) and therefore had above-industry-baseline referral traffic from ChatGPT, as well as conversion funnels tailored to that channel.

Key Findings

  • ChatGPT referrals convert at higher rates than other marketing channels across every industry in the dataset. 
  • Conversational AI pre-qualifies leads more effectively than keyword-based targeting, as users arrive with articulated, specific, detailed needs in natural language rather than broad search terms.
  • Industries where buyers conduct extensive pre-purchase research, like hotels & resorts, higher education, entertainment, manufacturing, and legal services, show the largest conversion gains from ChatGPT. Industries with more institutionalized or relationship-driven sales processes, including engineering, heavy equipment, and financial services, show the smallest gains, though ChatGPT conversion rates remain higher than other marketing channels across all industries.

As ChatGPT usage grows and the platform expands its paid advertising capabilities, this conversion advantage over traditional search is likely to increase further.
