From August 10 – November 3, 2026, our research team performed a study on how Reddit affects the companies that AI platforms rank and recommend. Reddit is often described as the most cited website in AI search, and marketers regularly ask us whether it should influence their budgets. To answer the question, we conducted our own research, including a study of 36,140 buying-intent queries and a separate study of 4,213 commercial prompts, and aggregated eight outside datasets published between November 2025 and November 2026.
Throughout this report, we treat citations and recommendations as separate measures. A citation is a source shown with an AI answer. A recommendation is a company an AI platform puts forward when a buyer asks for one. AI rankings refer to the order of those recommendations. In the sections below, we break down Reddit’s influence by platform, over time, against other ranking factors, and across website types.
Summary of Findings
- Reddit has a small measured effect on which companies AI platforms recommend. Social sentiment, the ranking factor that includes Reddit, accounts for 5.9% of the influence on AI retrieval.
- ChatGPT is the only major platform whose algorithm weights social sentiment, at 11%. Our published algorithm weights for Google Gemini and Claude include no such factor.
- Forum communities, including Reddit, supplied 1.8% of the citations behind top recommendations across 36,140 buying-intent queries.
- The share of ChatGPT answers citing Reddit fell from 26.8% to 3.7% in August 2026, while the share in Google AI Mode fell from 23.1% to 16.3%.
Reddit Influence on AI Rankings by Platform
Each AI platform treats Reddit differently. In the table below, we pair each platform’s U.S. market share and its social sentiment weight, both from our research, with the most recent outside measurement of how often it cites Reddit. (For clarity, social sentiment is the ranking factor in our GEO algorithm breakdown that covers discussion on forums, public social media, and news sites.)
Reddit Influence on AI Rankings by Platform (November 2026)
| Platform | U.S. Market Share | Social Sentiment Weight | Reddit Citation Rate | Effect on Rankings |
| ChatGPT | 52.3% | 11% | 3.7% of answers | Small, greatest between similar companies |
| Google Gemini (including AI Mode in Google Search) | 26.3% | None | 5.1% of Gemini answers, 16.3% of AI Mode answers | Indirect, through Google search results |
| Claude | 11.2% | None | 0 of 8,193 citations | None measured |
Our team took the following points from the data:
- We found that Reddit’s direct effect on rankings is concentrated in ChatGPT, the largest platform, where social sentiment carries an 11% weight.
- Our ChatGPT research showed that social sentiment matters most as a deciding factor between similar companies in competitive markets with no clear leader.
- Our data showed no measurable path from Reddit to Claude’s recommendations. DEJAN’s citation data, reported by 97th Floor, found zero Reddit citations across nearly 140,000 Anthropic grounding sources.
Reddit Citations After the August 2026 ChatGPT Change
Reddit’s position in AI answers changes quickly, which affects how much weight any single measurement deserves. In August 2026, ChatGPT reduced its use of Reddit within days, while Google’s platforms moved far less. In the table and chart below, we show cloro’s measurements of the share of answers citing Reddit on each platform across that period.
Share of AI Answers Citing Reddit by Period (August 2026)
| Platform | Before Aug. 8 | Aug. 8 to 13 | From Aug. 14 | Change in Points |
| ChatGPT | 26.8% | 14.3% | 3.7% | -23.1 |
| Google AI Mode | 23.1% | 17.7% | 16.3% | -6.8 |
| Google Gemini app | 6.6% | 4.8% | 5.1% | -1.5 |

Promptwatch recorded the same drop using a different measure. Reddit held 3.83% of all ChatGPT citations from July 18 to August 7, then averaged 0.52% from August 14 to 17, a decline of 86.4%. OpenAI has not explained the change, and Promptwatch has not ruled out a data collection issue. Our team took the following points from the data:
- We found that the decline was specific to ChatGPT. Google AI Mode lost less than a third as many points, and the Gemini app held close to its earlier level.
- Our analysis showed no recovery by autumn. Cloro measured Reddit in 4.9% of ChatGPT answers in the week of October 5, against 25.9% in the week of July 27.
- We found that a company relying on Reddit for ChatGPT presence carries the risk of a sudden platform change. A similar drop occurred in September 2025, when one dataset showed Reddit falling from 14.29% to 0.21% of ChatGPT sources.
Reddit vs Other AI Ranking Factors
A marketer deciding how much attention Reddit deserves needs to see it next to the other factors that shape AI retrieval. In the table and chart below, we show the relative influence of each factor from our Impact of Structured Data on AI Rankings study, which ran from June 8 to September 18, 2026. Standard AI search refers to a person asking an AI platform for options, while agentic search refers to an AI agent shortlisting or buying on that person’s behalf.
Relative Influence on AI Retrieval by Factor (September 2026)
| Factor | Standard AI Search | Agentic Search |
| Authoritative list mentions | 33.1% | 21.2% |
| Third-party affirmation of leadership | 12.9% | 9.9% |
| Awards, accreditations, affiliations | 10.7% | 7.9% |
| Online reviews | 9.9% | 10.3% |
| Suitability | 9.6% | 13.8% |
| Client roster and customer data | 7.9% | 8.4% |
| Social sentiment (includes Reddit) | 5.9% | 3.2% |
| Information consistency | 5.2% | 12.6% |
| Content clarity | 3.4% | 6.3% |
| Schema and structured data | 0.9% | 4.6% |
| Technical accessibility | 0.5% | 1.8% |

Our team took the following points from the data:
- We found that social sentiment ranks seventh of 11 factors in standard AI search. Reddit is one part of that factor, alongside other forums, public social media, and news coverage, so 5.9% is an upper limit on Reddit’s share.
- Our data showed that authoritative list mentions carry more than five times the influence of social sentiment in standard AI search.
- We found that social sentiment loses influence in agentic search, falling from 5.9% to 3.2%, while information consistency more than doubles to 12.6%.
Forum Citations for Buying-Intent Queries
The closest measure of Reddit’s role in commercial decisions comes from the citations AI platforms use when they recommend a company. In the table and chart below, we show the website types behind the top recommendation across the 36,140 buying-intent queries in our Most Cited Websites by AI Models study, last updated in late 2026. The forum category covers Reddit, Quora, and StackExchange together. The table shows the 12 largest of the 20 website types we tracked.
Website Types Cited for Buying-Intent Queries (November 2026)
| Website Type | Citations | Share of Citations |
| Product recommendation media | 7,228 | 20.0% |
| Consumer review platforms | 5,746 | 15.9% |
| YouTube and video reviews | 4,337 | 12.0% |
| Traditional media | 3,614 | 10.0% |
| New media | 3,036 | 8.4% |
| Directory sites | 2,494 | 6.9% |
| Corporate blogs and thought leadership | 2,096 | 5.8% |
| B2B marketplace directories | 1,662 | 4.6% |
| Commercial and brand sites | 1,337 | 3.7% |
| eCommerce marketplaces | 1,048 | 2.9% |
| Influencer and creator sites | 867 | 2.4% |
| Forum communities | 651 | 1.8% |

Our team took the following points from the data:
- We found that forum communities ranked 12th of 20 website types, with 651 citations across 36,140 queries.
- Our data showed that buyers’ peer opinions reach AI platforms more often through review platforms, which earned about nine times as many citations as forums.
- We found that the forum share is an upper limit for Reddit in this dataset, and that it was collected before ChatGPT’s August 2026 change.
Why Published Reddit Figures Disagree
Journalists searching this subject will find Reddit figures ranging from about 13% to under 1%, and most of the gap comes from what each dataset counts. In the table below, we compare the most frequently referenced measurements by their period and scope.
Published Measurements of Reddit in AI Search (November 2026)
| Source | Period | What Was Measured | Reddit Figure |
| Semrush | Oct. 2025 | Share of ChatGPT Search responses | About 13% |
| LLM Pulse | Nov. 2026 | Share of citations across five AI engines | 6.87% |
| Promptwatch | Jul. 18 to Aug. 7, 2026 | Share of ChatGPT citations | 3.83% |
| Jarred Smith | Sept. 18 to 20, 2026 | Share of 32,089 citations across four platforms | 2.1% |
| First Page Sage | June 2026 | Forum share of citations behind top recommendations | 1.8% |
| DEJAN, via 97th Floor | Six months, reported July 2026 | Candidate sources OpenAI went on to cite | 0.61% |
| Discovered Labs | Nov. to Dec. 2025 | Share of 28,633 visible ChatGPT citations | 0.35% |
The measures in this table use different denominators, so their figures should not be read as a single trend. The Everything-PR figure is a calculated aggregate across studies, while a share of responses counts any answer with at least one Reddit source and will exceed a share of all citations. Prompt mix also matters: Jarred Smith’s data showed Reddit as the top cited website for home espresso at 6.7%, while it missed the top ten for payroll, project management, and managed security. Our team took the following points from the data:
- We found that retrieval and citation are separate steps. DEJAN’s data showed Reddit among the candidate sources in 76% of OpenAI searches, with 0.61% of those candidates cited.
- Our analysis showed that consumer categories offer Reddit the most room, and that it has the least presence in B2B software and services categories.
- We found that Reddit citation rates alone say little about rankings. Our recommended measure is whether a company’s recommendation rate changes, because a cited thread may not support the company it mentions.
