OpenAI began testing ChatGPT ads in the US in February 2026, initially with large brands, at a minimum spend of roughly $200K on a $60 CPM model. As of April 2026, OpenAI has lowered the minimum to $50K, introduced cost-per-click pricing at roughly $3–$5 per click, and opened its self-serve ads manager to global advertisers. 

At those CPC rates, the projected conversion rates below imply effective costs per acquisition ranging from roughly $50 in high-converting industries like Higher Education to over $1,500 in low-converting industries like Financial Services. Because conversion tracking on the platform is still maturing, our research team projected the conversion rates advertisers can expect by combining our prior analysis of organic-to-paid conversion rate differences (e.g., SEO vs. PPC) with the data in our Organic ChatGPT Conversion Rates report.  In this report, we focus specifically on conversion rates, segmenting our data by industry. ChatGPT Ad Conversion Rates: What to Expect

ChatGPT Ads initially launched for logged-in adult users in the US on the Free or Go subscription tiers. OpenAI has since expanded into Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and opened its self-serve ads manager to global advertisers in April 2026.  As OpenAI rolls out ads more broadly, advertisers should expect the following changes in user behavior:

  • ChatGPT power users are more likely to be on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Education plans.  If OpenAI chooses to expand to paid users, advertisers should expect lower conversion rates, as these users are more likely to be using ChatGPT for business purposes (e.g., generating code, analyzing data, writing marketing copy) rather than seeking product or service recommendations.
  • While initial prices will be relatively low to attract a broad user base and foster dependency, advertising costs will increase over time, as has happened with Google, Meta, and LinkedIn ads after their early adoption periods.
  • As agentic AI matures, advertising will expand to include sponsored suggestions as upsells or alternatives. For example, a user using ChatGPT to book travel may be suggested a sponsored location as an add-on.
